    A:

As a general rule, NO! However, as with almost everything- it really depends on your expectations.

Think about points in two ways- from the developer’s point of view and from the owner’s point of view.

A developer creates a points conversion program simply to enable them to sell off season time. By selling points, the developer eliminates the difference between an off season week and a prime demand week(other than the points needed to make that reservation)… This is normally a very lucrative tactic for a developer! A developer does not start this process with the intention of creating a better level of service for owners… It’s all about the conversion fees that will be collected and an increase in future sales profit. There are also normally additional service fees, housekeeping fees, reservation fees, club fees, etc that can also be implemented.

From an owner’s persective, conversion can create problems. If you regularly use your week or season at your home resort, converting to points could negatively impact your usage. Once you convert, you are now being forced to compete with EVERY OTHER points owner for that same reservation. And even the low season owners now have the opportunity to book a few days during high season, thereby eliminating the full high demand week from availability.

Another issue which impacts availability is the distribution of weeks vs points. If the resort has a large percentage of weeks owners on the books, those weeks won’t be available to points owners. Marriott is rumored to be starting a points conversion program in the next few months. For Ocean Pointe owners (which is a sold out resort originally set up as floating weeks during a specific season)- unless a large number of owners convert- there will be very few weeks available to points owners. Owners who used to visit Ocean Pointe may find that they can no longer find any availability!

On the flip side, if you rarely every use your home resort or week- a point conversion can benefit you as it enables you to avoid dealing with the third party exchange systems.
